Let's talk about Parentese

Most parents know that the amount of language that a child hears is important. But most parents don't know that how they talk to their child may be MORE important.

"Parentese" is fully grammatical speech that involves real words, stretched-out vowels and exaggerated tones of voice. It sounds happy and it signals total engagement with the child. I love this!!! More and more support for the impact of social engagement and interaction right from the get-go. This IS my soapbox, and my families and my colleagues have heard it all.....

If you want to give it a try, keep 3 things in mind:

  • Keep your overall pitch higher

  • Keep your intonation interesting....... your "highs" are higher and your "lows" are lower

  • Talk slower and WAIT, give your baby a chance to take a turn in the social interaction

Cut to the chase, children of coached parents babbled more and had more real words by 14 months of age. How awesome is that!
